Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and remains the cultural heart of Sri Lanka. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) is the most sacred Buddhist shrine on the island.

Visit during the Esala Perahera festival (July/August) for a spectacular display of traditional dance, music, and decorated elephants.
